The Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent presented a 2024 $1000 Kiwanis Foundation of Canada Matching Scholarship to Leela McLaughlin, a resident of Chatham-Kent and graduate of Ursuline College Chatham (UCC). Marlena Goncalves (left), Club President, and Mary Alice Marchand (right), Chair of the Club’s Scholarship Committee, are shown making the presentation at a recent club meeting.

The club’s Scholarship Committee selected her for one its two scholarships because of her impressive academic accomplishments and her volunteerism and participation in her school and community. At UCC she was involved in Kidwin Zhiingwaak (an Indigenous leadership group), UCC Cares and the drama club among other activities. In her community she was a volunteer making blankets for the homeless, serving as a figure skating Program Assistant and providing leadership for the Little Flowers group at her church.

Leela will be attending University of Windsor in the Concurrent Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) program with a career goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.

Appreciation is expressed to the Club’s Scholarship Committee for their hard work in selecting two recipients from the 24 deserving applicants from 7 Chatham-Kent secondary schools. Committee members are Mary Alice Marchand (Chair), Lu-Ann Cowell, Dennis Myers, David Paradis, Derek Robertson and Antoon van der Reijden.
